I've had a bit of quilters block since I got back from holiday. I started on my next bee block a few times with not much to show for it. I started on a few things for the shop, I have begun drafting a new pattern but my heart wasn't really in any of it.
I want to sew, make something pretty, create something new but with lack of inspiration and zero determination to finish what I have started I am obviously not getting anywhere!
What do you do when you find yourself in a creative slump?
The thing that helps me is to finally make time to sew one of the many patterns I have been meaning to sew. It very much feels like a KitKat moment when I don't have to come up with a design and instead just play with my pretty fabrics.
So I started with one popsicle block and well, one blissful sewing marathon later (thank god for play dates!) I sat back to behold the sugary sweetness of my new pillow.

Just as I was wondering where to put such a girly pink pillow fit for a princess my little Mr. came home.
'is that for me?'
-Do you like it?
'uhm, yes'
-Can you tell what it is?
....
' ice cream!! will you put it in my room mum?'
-But yes of course sweetheart!
He ran back out to show it to his friend.
'look my mum made this all by herself!'
Be still my heart.

Awww.. what a boy! Loved this story and your pillow and your remedy for a creative slump. I agree - sewing a "pattern" of any kind is a great way to rebound.
ReplyDeleteaww, what a sweet story (and a great pillow!)
ReplyDeleteGreat pillow!

ReplyDeleteGreat story! I love your pillow - the border fabric is adorable!
ReplyDeleteAwwww! What a wee star! He has great taste too :-)
ReplyDeleteFab pillow! Your little man is clearly very well educated :)
ReplyDeleteawwwwwwwwwwww!!!! Good taste, that boy!
ReplyDeleteCute cute cute - be still my beating heart - I so love the sayings of little ones - they will stay for ever! Cute cushion too!
ReplyDeleteForgot to say I love your new header.
ReplyDeleteSweet!!! And that penguin-sicle is just the cutest thing! Hurrah for your little guy! That is really precious!
ReplyDeleteWell done to you for making that 'All By Yourself' actually it is very lovely and I'd want it in my room too. I often getting sewing slump. It comes on out of nowhere. I think for me it's when the rest of my life gets in the way and is too mentally distracting for me to focus and settle enough on sewing. Thankfully the phases pass pretty quickly too!
ReplyDeleteOH Sweetness, your new pillow is a real treat for the eyes!
ReplyDeleteOh he knows how to work his mum!! It is gorgeous though, please can I have one for my room!
ReplyDeleteWhat a cute pillow! Great work on making it yourself...though it's funny as to who would have helped you make it.
ReplyDeleteHow sweet of him to want it and run off to show his friend =D
Love it, and love the reaction too. I want one too please ;o) I'm kind of having the opposite problem creatively right now, I just wish I didn't have to do the day job, then I might get some of it done...
ReplyDeletethat is the cutest story ever!!
ReplyDeleteIt is so nice to hear that I am not the only one! We went on a family camping trip a week ago and I've had a hard time getting my sewing mo jo back! I haven't got it back yet but I'm going to try and get some project deadlines done between not and the end of the weekend. I'll let you know how it goes : )
ReplyDeleteLove the pillow! Sometimes it is nice to sew something pretty with someone elses pattern and not think too much about anything but picking out the fabric.
Love that your little guy wants it for his room... so sweet : )
First things first, your son is such a sweetie!!! That was the cutest story ever! Also, when I'm in a sewing funk I make a few improv blocks or do a small(er) quick project...anything to just change direction for a day or so and get my head together... Oh, and in other news, I'm on the verge of starting your dress tutorial! I'll add pics to the Flickr group when I'm done. (Wow, that was quite the collection of random thoughts, huh?)
ReplyDeleteThat is so gorgeous! What a super little guy you have :o)
ReplyDeleteI can totally see why he loves it, it's superb.
Precious story, great pillow! I think sewing when it "needs" to be done is what gets me in a slump, although it's all "needing" to be done for my own reasons. But starting something fresh and new just "because" is the best way to get out of a slump. Just thumb your nose at all those WIP's and make it just cuz. :)
ReplyDeleteSweet sweet boy and sweet sweet cushion!
ReplyDeleteWhat a sweetie! It is a beautiful pillow! I usually follow something prescriptively and sit back and let someone else's instructions do the work when inspiration isn't flowing
ReplyDeleteThat is adorable! The cushion and the story :D I wish my brother wouldn't be such a boy and would like something so pink.

Aww, that is so sweet. And the cushion is lovely. I'm hoping to get back to my popsicles soon (and then I'll have to start on the ice cream block!).
ReplyDeleteIt's frustrating when you feel the slump, but I always try not to rush it. I know it will return. Sometimes, just sorting fabric or scraps helps me. Or go be creative in the kitchen!
Well if that isn't enough to melt those ice lollies I don't know what is!
ReplyDeleteThat is so sweet and the pillow is gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteOh how adorable!! The cushion is gorgeous :)
ReplyDeleteIt's lovely and glad your little man likes it!
ReplyDeleteyour pillow is amazing and v.inspiring! Glad it's gone to a good owner :)
ReplyDeleteI'm SO in love with your pillow to the point I am thinking about making myself a pillow for the first time! The way you added the sweets borders is so clever! This pillow is all about sweetness! And your little guy is cute for wanting it for his room! I'm jealous of him!
ReplyDeleteSuch a good lesson in relaxing by letting someone else do the hard work! It's good to just switch your mind off and sew. :-) I love the pillow, and how lovely that your little boy loves it too... he has great taste.
ReplyDeleteyour pillow is gorgeous and i love that your son claimed it straight away. that melts a momma's heart faster than a popsicle in 95 degrees F.
