w.i.p ~moth bee block~

I'm back!!

I freaked a little when they told me yesterday they were confident to have my internet restored in 5 working days...I mean five whole days without internet who could handle that?! ;-) But 27 hours later I'm back up and running.

I need your opinions on this bee block I'm working on for Annabel in the cocorico bee
I was inspired by Meg's Bee block and though it could do with a moth friend. After excitedly piecing the wing part I realized there was no way I could piece that scalloped edge. The only solution I could come up with was to applique the whole moth onto the background fabric. Now after all this needle turn applique I'm not so sure if I like it at all!

w.i.p. bee block for annabel

It obviously still needs antenna, and perhaps I'm just quick to judge and the antenna will make all the difference.
My little monster saw this and asked what it was. When I told him 'it is supposed to be a butterfly dear' he said 'well that didn't quite work out then mum did it!'
So what do you think, carry on or reject pile? And if carry on is your answer any suggestions on how I should do the antenna?
I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Work In Progress ~ Wednesday~

I've finally made a decision what to do with my Anna Maria Horner stash.
A quilt for my bed, that's what I settled on a while back but the design.. I couldn't make my mind up about that. First I started ambitiously with some English paper piecing. I love this design, but I feared I would never ever get a full sized quilt finished this way!

AMH paperpieced circles w.i.p

Then I though I'd let my fellow Fresh Modern Bee2 members come up with some amazing blocks, and they did!
But all the while I wasn't sure which way to go with this quilt. Until finally I made up my mind and went for squares...genius right?! No, not really but I love simple patchwork squares and these fabrics are so pretty to look at why cut them up even more? I made big blocks 9" square with a few pieced ones scattered in to add a little interest and to use up some of the scraps I had left.

It's a big quilt 72" x 81" and will cover my bed up nicely. Basting wasn't fun, but I'm using this wonderfully soft silk batting and a voile backing. It's going to be such luxury to sleep under this!
I'm now figuring out how to quilt it. Because the design is so simple I want to make the quilting a bit more interesting so I'm experimenting with a flower design and perle cottons. I'll let you know how that goes!

P.S. I've put some lovely Anna Maria Horner scrap bags in my shop they'd be perfect for some scrappy pillows or even some English paper piecing!

Work in progress Wednesday ~ quilting

Well it's not wednesday but work in progress thursday just doesn't sound as good!

I've been overwhelmed with all the positive responses I got on this quilt top. Even Laurie Wisbrun herself commented on flickr!!! {I nearly fell off my chair believe me!}

The pressure is really on to get this quilted!
It took me a while to come up with a plan how to quilt this, but I've sorta kinda figured it out now. I often make some changes along the way. But usually once I make a good start the rest follows automatically.

For the grey areas I decided I wanted to repeat a pattern of the fabric in the quilting. These connected oval dots are on the green and red fabrics. I've quilted them with white DMC threads my mum got me in France. It was almost a shame to open them, the box was still sealed in it's original paper!
But I needed them to quilt!

I've used black silk to quilt on the lines of the birdcages, small stitches, and I like how they show up on the back now as well.

Still have a lot to quilt before it's finished! I do enjoy handquilting, it's very soothing to me :-)

What are you making?

Work in progress Wednesday #3

Thanks again to all of you who gave me advice in my previous post !

I corrected the strips I had cut already and sewed them all together. Starched and starched some more, it's not perfect and my flimsy will not do as it's told and lie flat. But I do think that once it's quilted these imperfections will not show {as much at least...I hope!}

I've appliqued all the black 'ravens' now {I'm not much of a birdwatcher so I can't be certain these qualify to be called ravens, but it is what I'm calling them!} I chose to go for  raw edge applique this time, instead of the needleturn applique I did with the pillows. Much easier and quicker!

Something I've been wanting to do for a while now is draw on fabric.  Bit scary at first but I finally did it! Using my fabric marker anything I can manage to draw I can put on any fabric I want, it's super cool!!

I even love that my drawing's aren't perfect, it's turning out pretty close to what I had in mind.

I'll be basting and quilting this one soon. Not exactly sure how I will quilt it and I still need to go get some wadding, but soon!

Work in progress Wednesday

This is what I've been working on while my little monster's at school.

There's something about raibow colours that just makes me so happy!

These squares range from 1'' to 2'', mostly nine patch blocks mixed with some different sized squares blocks.

Now baste...

and quilt!

Pinwheel Production Progress Pictures ~ Part Two {or a bunch of P's work in progress}

I found some time to sew!

More pinwheels finished.

This will be a little less than throw sized quilt to practice more free motion quilting on.

Enjoy your weekend!

~My Inner Granny~

There are a lot of great things about summer break, having my little monster home, not having to wake up to the dreaded sound of my alarm clock {heaven!} getting to spend lots of time with the people I love, the food, the sun.
But it's seriously interfering with my sewing time!

So I needed a portable crafty project. Something I can take with me easily, that doesn't require much planning but still fun. Granny squares!

Oh my, are they addictive! Perfect little project for the summer. I just stuff my wool and crochet needle in my bag and off I go.

I can even put up with the rain now.

How's your summer?

It was love at first sight...

when I decided to put together a pinwheel and some 1" squares for a new pillow. This is definately a combination I will use again.

Still practicing my free motion quilting but I'm getting braver and bolder.

Even though my stitches are still a mess and the tension isn't all it could be, I did it and I'm overall happy with the result.

I'm thinking a larger pinwheel in a more contrasting colour with the white and these cute 1" squares next time. Perhaps there'll even be a quilt in this.

Enjoy your day!

Going back and forth { a long post}

While machine quilting my Whimsy quilt I've got lots of time to think. So I thought I'd share some of these thoughts with you. This quilt has a lot of firsts for me, first time using precuts, first time I'm machine quilting { if you don't count my very first attempts at quilting when I was machine quilting with my regular pressure foot! I know!} first time using machine applique, first time a quilt has come together this quick. Well I just had lots to ponder on.

On using the precuts, I love that by eliminating the bulk of the cutting a quilt top can come together quite quickly. I'm pleased that I decided on a design where I used up all of my Layer Cake and Charm squares. I just knew that if I didn't I would end up with the bits of fabric I liked least in this line and they would be destined to remain stash for a long time.
It's easy to use precuts, but that's also the part that I'm not liking so much. There's a thrill in taking a fabric that you absolutely love and going out to find just the right fabrics to match it. Using precuts you know in advance that all the fabrics will go together. But I like the anticipation of cutting up fabrics I pulled together myself and keeping all my fingers crossed to see if they look as good all grouped together as I thought they would in my head. {I don't have one of those fancy computer designing programs, so apart from some sketches it's all in my head}
Trying to work out the placement of those two or three fabrics that on the whole help the quilt look good, but next to each other just look all wrong.
I do think I will use precuts again, I know I will because I still have a Layer Cake of Aviary and also because my local quilt shop doesn't have as many gorgeous fabrics any more as they used to some years back. Ordering online precuts, or fabrics from the same line/designer takes the risk out of ending up with a bunch a fabric you can't use. But I think I'll mix it up a bit more next time.

Since I'm not as brilliant at free motion quilting as I'd hoped, I went for straight line machine quilting. I chose to not mark my horizontal lines but rather use the edges of my walking foot as a guide. I knew that doing this my lines would end up being a bit {or a lot} wonky, wich in my mind would bring a bit more life to my quilt. And I think it's sorta kinda working. I'm not completely sure that I chose well in quilting just horizontal lines all over the quilt, but I do think I love them being wonky. I was right in thinking it would be terribly boring if the quilting lines were to be straight as well. I'm just not so sure that these wonky lines ensured a non-boring quilt. I've done about a third of the quilting and I am noticing that my blocks are starting to look a bit warped. Not sure whether that is because of not basting my quilt properly or just not quilting it properly or both!

One thing's for sure this is going to be my quickest quilt ever. I haven't even had my usual thoughts on what my next project might be, it's going that quickly. Wich is perfectly all right since I'll still be hand quilting my orchids quilt for quite some time. Oh lovely quiet hand quilting where I can watch some telly, listen to my music and let my thoughts run freely on what my next project should be.

I am so pleased you've made it to the end of my post, thanks for reading!!

Enjoy your weekend!

about fabric & what the kids made & whimsy in progress

Yesterday I went to market and came back with this. All bargains of course! The fabric on top of the pile was brought there especially for me, wich made me feel really good so I had to buy 2 meters of it. The brown dots are going to be the backing to my whimsy quilt and the blue was a steal at €3 a meter so I bought it.

I also brought home this pile of lovely cuteness

I've been volunteering at my little monsters' school and helped the older kids do their embroidery. Now these will have to be made into little lavender scented pillows. I'll be busy sewing the backing fabrics on this weekend{wich the kids picked out themselves ~ cute!}.

My Whimsy circle quilt {working title} is coming along nicely. In fact I'm amazed how fast this top is coming together!
Lots of circles to be machine appliqued...

Some serious chain stitching..

And my quilt top was all done!

Here you can see it lounging on the ironing board.

If you're looking for me, I'll be behind my sewing machine ;-)

Enjoy your weekend!

W.I.P {Whimsy In Progress}

I've decided to go with the circles rather than squares. To make the 'boxed in' square quilt I would've been better of having a jelly roll and a charm pack. I'll make that one day when I do have the right ingredients. This design I've worked out so I would use all my layer cake and charm squares, no left overs!

This is what I've been working on since yesterday.

Cutting circles from my charms, I ended up doing them one by one to get the circles as acurate as possible.

Sewing the circles to my Layer cake squares using a small zig zag stitch.

Making progress!

I'll be back soon!

I'll have my cake & watch it {..for now }

I've got these lovely new layercakes.
Mr. Man said I could have my layer cakes and eat them!

I really want to start sewing up a new quilt top straight away. But I can't since I was run over by a rotary cutter yesterday and my thumb will be in bandages for at least two more days.

So I'm laying out Whimsy on the floor, arranging and rearranging colour combinations, and just stare at them for a while!
I've got a layer cake plus a charmpack of Whimsy and I've arranged them on the floor with a charm square on top of the layercake square. I'm loving the look of these 'boxed in' squares and if I cut up my layercake to border the charm squares I should have enough strips left to make scrappy binding for the finished quilt. Perhaps even some for a pieced backing too. So I might go for that.
But I also like the idea of turning the charms into an applique on top of the larger squares, I'm thinking circles, and I'm loving that idea too!

But since I've got at least two more days to think on what to do with them I'm open to suggestions ~ what would you make with them?

Enjoy your day!

Somewhere where the orchids grow.

Slowly but surely I'm finishing blocks on my quilt.

I've really gotten into the combination of patchwork, embroidery and applique. It's quite addictive!

For 'somewhere where the orchids grow' I was inspired by Rosalie Quinlan, I've used a lot of her'grandmother's flower garden' fabric and Leanne Beasley (who happens to have the same surname as me!)

Somewhere where the orchids grow is my twist on making a memory quilt I suppose.
I've themed each block, sorta kinda. And I've used phrases, parts of lyrics, film books etc. that have a meaning to me but are not always obviously clear to others.

I'd better get back to stitching some more!

Thanks for stopping by.

P.S
I'm playing around with the look of my blog a bit...thanks for your patience!
